Emergency Department Visits for Suspected Suicide Attempts Among Persons Aged 12–25 Years Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic — United States, January 2019–May 2021

2020年3月初めのCOVID-19パンデミックと物理的距離の保持と外出禁止令を含む対応は、アメリカの日常生活を混乱させた。2020年に12～17歳の青少年に生じたンタルヘルス関連救急科(ED)受診の割合は、2019年と比較して31％増加した。2020年6月に調査した18～24歳の成人の25％が過去30日間にパンデミックに関連した自殺念慮を経験していた。これらの年齢層における自殺企図の疑いがあるED受診の最近での傾向は不明である。CDCはNational Syndromic Surveillance Program(NSSP)のデータを使用し、2019年1月1日～2021年5月15日、12～25歳における性別、およびCOVID-19パンデミックの3つの異なるフェーズごとに自殺企図の疑いがあるED受診の傾向を調査した。2020年3月29日～4月25日における12～25歳の自殺企図の疑いがあるED受診は、2019年の同期間と比較して減少した。しかし、2020年5月初旬までに自殺企図の疑いのあるED受診数は12～17歳の青少年、特に女子で増加し始めた。12～17歳の女子における自殺企図の疑いによる週平均ED受診数は、2020年7月26日～8月22日に前年の同時期よりも26.2％増加し、2021年2月21日～3月20日では2019年の同時期よりも50.6％増加した。18～25歳の男女における自殺企図の疑いによるED受診数は2020年の春に2019年の同期間よりも16.8％減少し、その後は増加したが2019年の受診数と同様であった。しかし、18～25歳の成人の自殺企図の疑いによるED受診率は、パンデミック中を通して2019年と比較して増加した。若者に焦点を当てた自殺防止策には、インフラの混乱時に適応される包括的なアプローチが求められ、多部門のパートナーシップ(公衆衛生、メンタルヘルス、学校、家族など)と、自殺リスクに影響する範囲の要因に対処するエビデンスに基づく戦略の実施が必要である。
