厳冬後の小児の栄養状態評価－モンゴル，2001年6月

1999年から2001年にかけてモンゴルでは酷寒と多雪による厳しい冬となり、多くの家畜が衰弱死し、それらを食料、燃料および収入源とする住民に深刻な影響を与えている。国民の40%が健康、食料問題に直面していると考えられ、精神的なストレスやそれによる児童の不登校率が増加し、食料や水、医療サービスを求めて都市部へと人口が移動している。これを受けて、モンゴル政府からWHOとUNICEFに対して調査補助要請があり、2001年6月、被害の深刻だった73地域から474名の小児(6-59ヶ月)を無作為に抽出し、被害が少ないあるいは被害のなかった184地域の小児463名と、身長、体重、貧血状態(Hb値)および家庭の家畜の被害状況が比較調査された。被害地域の家畜損失率は32.1%、非被害地域では7.4%であり、衰弱(身長に対する低体重)、発育障害(年齢に対する低身長)、低体重(年齢に対する低体重)率は両地域間に有意差は認められず、また、貧血状態にも有意差は認めなかった。発育障害、貧血傾向は全国的に認められ、深刻な低栄養状態による発育不良と、小児および若い女性の鉄分不足による貧血が指摘される結果となった。さらにこの冬の食料不足は来冬の食料備蓄に影響するため、早急な対策を講じる必要があると考えられる。
