動物と接触する展示に手洗い場の設置を義務づける州法 ― アメリカ、2016年3～4月

ふれあい動物園や農産物フェアなど、動物と接触する展示は大腸菌、サルモネラ、クリプトスポリジウムなどの人畜共通感染症の感染源となりうるため、National Association of State Public Health Veterinariansは動物に触れた後に手を洗うことを推奨している。CDCのPublic Health Law Programの調査では7州(ニュージャージー州、ニューヨーク州、ノースカロライナ州、ペンシルベニア州、ユタ州、ワシントン州、ウィスコンシン州)が法律により動物と接触する展示に手洗い場の設置を義務づけている。展示の種類や設置する設備に関しては州により異なり、ノースカロライナ州では動物と接触する展示はすべて(ふれあい動物園、ポニー乗馬、鶏を扱う展示など)を対象とするが、ウィスコンシン州はキャンプ場に設置するふれあい動物園のみを対象とする。ニューヨーク州、ノースカロライナ州、ペンシルベニア州、ウィスコンシン州では展示場に設置しなければならず、ノースカロライナ州は展示場の出口から3メートル以内の設置を求め、ペンシルベニア州は動物の展示場から便利の良い場所の設置を義務づけている。また、7州すべてにて手洗いを勧める注意書きの掲示、ニューヨーク州、ノースカロライナ州、ペンシルベニア州、ウィスコンシン州では手洗い場の案内の掲示を義務づけ、さらにペンシルベニア州では違反した場合の罰金(500ドル)、ウィスコンシン州では違反した場合は展示を中止または許可を取り消すなどと規定している。
