アメリカの2017-18年インフルエンザシーズンは顕著に重症度が高く、アメリカ全体で約4,500万人が罹患し、81万人がインフルエンザにより入院した。今回の調査の目的は、この深刻な全国的な季節性インフルエンザの流行中にユタ州におけるインフルエンザ疾患に罹患した患者数を推定し、今後のインフルエンザシーズンで最新情報をタイムリーに更新するために持続可能なシステムを構築することにある。インフルエンザ関連疾患の規模を知ることは、公衆衛生当局、政策立案者、医師が季節性インフルエンザの流行またはパンデミック中のインフルエンザについての連絡、計画、対応を調整するのに役立つ。全国的な方法と既存のインフルエンザの監視および検査データを使用して、2016-17年および2017-18年インフルエンザシーズン中のユタ州でのインフルエンザの疾病負担(インフルエンザの疾患数、インフルエンザのための受診、インフルエンザに関連した入院)を推定した。2016-17年インフルエンザシーズン中、ユタ州では推定265,000例が症候性疾患を発症し(ユタ州住民の9％に影響)、125,000例が受診し、2,700例が入院した。2017-18年シーズンでは、推定338,000例が症候性疾患を発症し(ユタ州居住民の約11％)、160,000例が受診し、3,900例が入院した。両方のシーズンで、症候性および診察を要した疾患の大半は、5～17歳および18～49歳の人に発生した。65歳以上の成人は、2016-17年および2017-18年シーズンにおける推定入院者数のそれぞれ47％、52％を占めた。他の州または郡の保健部門は、地域のインフルエンザの疾患負担を推定し、迅速な公衆衛生活動を支援するために、管轄区域で同様の方法を適応させることが可能である。
