皮膚がんはアメリカにおいてもっとも一般的ながんであり、基底細胞がん、有棘細胞がん、黒色腫の順に多いが、central cancer registries (CCRs)は基底細胞がんに関するデータを収集しておらず、その発症率は不明である。黒色腫は、発症率は低いが死亡率が高いがんであり、2012年、CCRsはアメリカにおける黒色腫の新規例は約67,000例、死亡例は約9,000例と報告している。皮膚がんの割合は1970年代初めより約3倍に増加しているが、多くが早期症例の増加であり死亡率には変化がなく、最近の分析では男性において進行例が多く、死亡率が増加している。発症リスクは肌質や遺伝的リスク因子(肌、瞳および髪の色、異形成母斑またはホクロなど)により異なり、非ヒスパニック系白人における黒色腫の発症率は非ヒスパニック系黒人の約25倍、ヒスパニック系の約6倍高値であるが、非ヒスパニック系黒人やヒスパニック系では非ヒスパニック系白人に比べ診断が遅れ、生存率は低い。また、紫外線曝露と皮膚がんとの関連性が示されているが、アメリカでは毎年37%が日焼けをしており、30歳未満の非ヒスパニック系白人では65%と多い。晴れた日に1時間以上屋外に出る場合、男性のおよそ67%、女性のおよそ73%がなんらかの日焼け予防対策をしていると報告されているが、個々の対策(日焼け止め、帽子、日傘、日焼け防止服など)の使用率は実質的に特に男性にて低く、日焼け止めを塗っているのは男性21%、女性:41%である。また、約1,160万人(16~25歳の非ヒスパニック系白人女性の約1/3も含む)が日焼けマシーンなどにより屋内で日焼けしている。皮膚がんの予防対策として、屋外での日焼け対策の強化、紫外線指数などの情報提供、国が目標とする皮膚がん予防を促進する政策の実施、屋内での日焼けによる害の減少、膚がん予防に関する研究、調査、モニタリングおよび評価の強化などが実施されており、また、アリゾナ州やテキサス州立大学MDアンダーソンがんセンターによるCall to Actionと呼ばれる予防戦略が行われ、他にもフロリダ州マイアミビーチ、マサチューセッツ州ボストン、ニュージャージー州モントクレアなどでそれぞれの対策が実施されている。
