Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists(CSTE)は2001～2009年にアメリカの州および準州の保健局の疫学調査に関する能力評価(ECA)を行っており、2010年は10月に50州およびワシントンDCを対象にインターネットベースの質問票調査を行った。調査目的は保健局で働く疫学専門家の人数と州および連邦からの資金提供との関係を検討することであり、今回は初めて地域の保健局で働く疫学専門家の人数も調査した。州および地域の保健局でフルタイム職員として勤務している疫学専門家は全体で3,754名であり、アメリカの人口10万人あたり1.22名であった。このうち2,476名(66%)は州、1,278名(34%)は地域の保健局の職員であった。州保健局の疫学専門家の数は2009年4月(2,193名)に比べて12.9%増加し、この増加には連邦の資金提供の変化が一部関与していると考えられた。疫学調査の分野別に評価した場合、感染性疾患と慢性疾患の分野の人員は2006年のECAの結果に比べて増加し、バイオテロ/緊急時対応、環境衛生、傷害、口腔衛生の分野の人員は減少した。全体として63%の州は疫学専門家の人員削減には州からの資金提供の減少が影響していると回答し、連邦からの資金提供の減少が影響していると回答したのは24%の州のみであった。今後のECAには、州保健局の疫学専門家の1/3を占める地域保健局で働く疫学専門家も含める必要がある。
