自家製バイオディーゼルによる有害物質の放出－コロラド州、2006年5月

2006年5月7日、コロラド州の住宅地で、有害物質（HazMat）の放出が発生した。自家製バイオディーゼル燃料のタンクを処理している家主が、タンクの発熱体を消し忘れ、週末そのままになっていた。発熱体が過熱し、周囲の倉庫や装置が燃える原因となった。倉庫にはバイオディーゼルとレストランの600ガロンより多い再生料理用油、ごく少量のグリセリンと水酸化ナトリウム、硫酸とリン酸1ガロン容器が収納されていた。火災時には、これらの混合物が地面に染み込んでいた。有資格のHazMatチームと地域の消防署が対応し、捜査当局は55ガロンのメタノール7容器とその他の有害物質を倉庫外で発見した。負傷者や避難者は出なかったが、その可能性を防止するためにバイオディーゼルは認可された販売店から購入することが必要である。最近のガソリン価格高騰によって、バイオディーゼルのような代替燃料に関心が高まってきた。バイオディーゼルは植物性油、動物性油、あるいはレストランの再生料理用油などの入手しやすい材料から製造できるため、米国ではディーゼル燃料の代替としてますます使用が増加している。一般に商業ベースで製造されるが、米国などでは個人使用のために家庭で製造する人もおり、自家製のバイオディーゼル製造者は負傷に対して著しく高い危険性があることを認識する必要がある。National Biodiesel Board（NBB）は商品として燃料の規制、技術、市場開発などを調整する非営利業界団体であり、この報告の事例は自家製バイオディーゼル製造により発生した不慮の火災における発熱体に関するNBBへの最初の事例であった。この有害物質の事例は、Colorado Department of Health and Environmentによって運営されるHazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance（HSEES）システムに報告された。
