母乳育児の人種および社会経済状態による格差－アメリカ、2004年

American Academy of Pediatricsは出産後少なくとも最初の1年間、その後は母子双方が望む限り母乳育児を行うことを奨励している。母乳育児は小児における中耳炎や気道感染症などの健康上のリスクを低下させ、母乳育児期間の長さは小児の肥満リスク低下や、また卵巣癌や閉経前乳癌のリスク低下などにも関与する。最近のアメリカ人小児における母乳育児実施率の人種や社会経済レベルによる差を調査するため、CDCはNational Immunization Survey（NIS、2004年）のデータを分析した。小児の母乳育児経験率は非ラテンアメリカ系白人71.5%、非ラテンアメリカ系黒人50.1%であった。母乳育児経験率は、WIC（Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children）において非対象とされる北東部地方に居住する小児、母親の出産年齢が20歳以下の小児を除き、検討したどのサブグループでも白人小児に比べ黒人小児が有意に低かった。また母乳育児をされた小児における生後6ヶ月までの母乳育児継続率は非ラテンアメリカ系白人53.9%と非ラテンアメリカ系黒人43.2%であった。公衆衛生プログラムは、特にその実施率が低いサブグループ（黒人、貧困層、若い母親、教育レベルが高等学校未満の母親、農村部に住む母親）を対象として今後も母乳育児を奨励し、その継続のための支援も強化するべきである。
