Barriers to Children Walking to or from School - United States, 2004

2010年の健康目標の1つに徒歩による登下校率を31%から50%に引き上げることが挙げられている。1969年には約半数の児童が徒歩または自転車で通学し、学校から1マイル以内に住む児童ではその割合は87%であったが、現在では15%以下に減少している。今回、2004年のConsumerStyles Surveyとその追跡調査から、5－18歳の徒歩による登下校率とその問題点について報告する。対象は5－18歳の児童を持つ親1,705名、うち1,588名(93%)が一番年下の子供についての徒歩通学に関し回答した。その結果、17%が通常1週間に1回以上、徒歩で登下校していると回答し、その回数は平均7.1回、年齢別では5－11歳で18.7%、12－18歳で15.3%であった。徒歩通学の障害としては、距離(61.5%)が最も多く、次いで交通上の危険(30.4%)、天気(18.6%)が多く、他に犯罪(11.7%)、学校側の指示(6.0%)などが挙げられ、また、15.9%は親の判断によるものであった。障害として距離を挙げた割合は徒歩通学者:6.8%、非徒歩通学者:72.9%と有意差を認めた。徒歩や自転車は循環器病、糖尿病、高血圧、結直腸癌などのリスク低下につながる日常的な活動であるため、現在、全国的にSafe Route to School(SR2S)計画が開始され、徒歩通学日の設定など、徒歩による登下校率を向上するための運動が展開されている。
