The Role of Public Health in Mental Health Promotion

全世界では約4億5,000万人が精神疾患を患い、全人口の約1/4が生涯のある時期、精神または行動障害を発症する。アメリカでは成人の約22%が1つ以上の診断可能な精神障害を有するとされており、生涯発症率は不安障害:29%、衝動制御障害:25%、気分障害:21%、物質使用障害:15%、その他:46%、さらに約1/10の小児が精神障害を有しており、精神障害に対する医療費は年間約1,500億ドルと推定されている。精神障害は他の疾患の発症、進行および転帰に影響を与え、薬物乱用、喫煙などの危険行動や身体活動の低下との関連性が指摘されているため、適切な治療が必要である。しかし実際は多くの症例が治療を受けておらず、公衆衛生機関により精神障害の危険性を広く認識させることが重要な課題とされている。CDCは精神の健康、危険行動、慢性疾患との同時罹患率に関するデータを収集する目的で、World Federation for Mental Healthとともに、World Mental Health Dayなどの運動を展開している。また、Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration、National Institute of Mental Healthなどをサポートし、精神的健康の保護および増進する役目を担っている。
