2003年、CDCは様々な原因による暴力死に関する詳細な情報を収集するための新たなサーベイランスシステムとしてNational Violent Death Reporting System(NVDRS)を開始した。この報告は、NVDRSに参加した6州(メリーランド、マサチューセッツ、ニュージャージー、オレゴン、サウスカロライナ、バージニア)における2003年の予備的データを紹介し、National Vital Statistics System(NVSS)による1993－2002年のデータと比較したものである。これら6州における年齢調整殺人率(10万人あたり)は、1993年から2000年にかけて7.0から5.0へと29%低下したが、2000年から2002年にかけては5.0から5.3へと6%増加した。2003年には6州で1,952例が殺人により死亡し、年齢調整殺人率は2002年よりも4%増加した。増加率が最大であったのは0－24歳の男性(18%)であり、この増加が2003年の殺人死増加のほぼ全てを占めた。2000－2003年における殺人率の傾向調査では、主に0－24歳の男性で有意な増加を認めた。一方、年齢調整自殺率(10万人あたり)は1993年から2000年にかけて10.2から8.9へと13%低下し、2000年から2002年にかけては0.3%の低下と比較的安定していた。しかし2003年には6州で3,415例が自殺し、年齢調整自殺率は2002年よりも5%増加した。2002年から2003年にかけて自殺率の有意な増加がみられたのは女性(19%)であったが、2000－2003年における自殺率の傾向調査では男性において有意な増加を認めた。暴力死関連事情におけるデータ分析は、個人的・社会的な暴力に関しての危険因子をより理解し、暴力死防止の可能性の識別に役立つものであり、適時の情報収集が必要である。
