郵便局でのリシン含有封筒の調査－サウスカロライナ,2003年

2003年10月15日、サウスカロライナ州Greenvilleのある郵便物処理・配送施設において脅迫状と密封容器が発見された。脅迫状には、要求が受け入れなければ毒液をまくと書かれていた。10月21日、CDCの検査によりその容器内にリシンが入っていることが確認された。リシン曝露の可能性に関連した人の健康への影響について評価するため、South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control(SCDHEC)とCDCはその郵便局の全従業員にインタビューを行い、10月15－29日に州全体でリシン曝露に一致する疾患のサーベイランスを開始した。10月22日、郵便局は詳細な疫学的調査と環境調査のため閉鎖された。CDCは郵便局内各所のふき取りサンプルなど計75サンプルを評価したが、全環境サンプルはリシン陰性であり、環境汚染のエビデンスはみられなかった。またリシン曝露を示唆する疾患を有する従業員はみられず、州全体でもリシン関連疾患患者は確認されなかった。郵便物発見以降に郵便局で働いていた全従業員の健康に異常がないことと環境サンプルのリシン陰性を確認した後、郵便局は再開された。11月19日現在、リシン関連疾患患者は確認されていない。今後、医師や健康管理局はリシン曝露を示唆する疾患に注意するべきである。
