化学兵器の曝露による疾患の認識－アメリカ,2003年

2001年9月11日以来、化学兵器によるテロ攻撃に対する不安が増大しており、さらに最近、食品に化学物質が混入される事件も発生している。CDCは化学物質誘発性疾患を特定し、医療機関や保健機関向けのガイドラインを作成している。化学兵器によるテロは、出現する症状が胃腸炎などといった一般的な疾患と類似すること、すぐには症状が現れないこと、食品、水、消費者製品に混入された場合には長期的な調査を要すること、複数の物質に曝露した場合症状が複雑化すること、医療従事者が化学物質の曝露に慣れていないことなどの理由からその判断が困難である。疫学的には、化学物質誘発性疾患のおそれがある受診者の異常増加、若者や健常人での原因不明死、患者からの原因不明な臭気、水など同一源のものを摂取した集団での発症、汚染媒体曝露後の急速な症状発現(知覚異常や嘔吐など)、植物、魚、動物などの原因不明死、よく知られた化学物質曝露による症状の発現などから推定が可能である。
