School Transportation Modes - Georgia, 2000

適度の身体活動は健康上有益であり、子供において徒歩通学は子供の手軽な身体活動のチャンスである。ジョージア州の子供の通学方法を検討するため、Georgia Division of Public Healthは2000年5月－8月に実施されたGeorgia Asthma Surveyのデータを分析した。この調査は、学校に通っている5－15歳の子供1,656人を対象とした。また学校からの距離が1マイル以下の所に住んでいる子供315人のサブセットについても分析した。1,656人中64人(4%)は週の大半を徒歩で、775人(49%)はスクールバスで、755人(43%)は大人の運転する車で通学していた。学校からの距離が1マイル以下の所に住んでいる315人では、56人(19%)が徒歩、106人(33%)がスクールバス、132人(42%)が大人の運転する車で通学していた。年長児は年少子供よりも、また非ラテンアメリカ系黒人子供は他の人種/民族グループの子供よりも徒歩通学率が高いようであった。しかし性別や居住地域(都市部、農村部)による有意差はみられなかった。2002年の秋、Georgia Asthma Surveyは通学方法に加え徒歩および自転車通学の障害についてのデータを収集するつもりである。徒歩通学イニシアチブ(International Walk to School Dayなど)は、徒歩および自転車通学を子供にとって安全で便利にものするための教育上、行動上、政策上、環境上の介入を奨励している。
