2001年11月7日、ミネソタ州の病院で大腿骨顆(骨軟骨)同種移植片を用いた膝再建術を受けた23歳の男性に、3日後手術部位疼痛が発現し、急速にショック状態へと進行して翌日死亡した。血液培養の結果、Clostridium sordelliiが検出された。また11月13日にイリノイ州で大腿骨顆(新鮮)と半月板(凍結)を用いた膝再建術を受けた17歳の男性は、翌日に第一世代セファロスポリン系抗生物質に反応しない発熱、8日後に敗血症性関節炎が発現したが、アンピシリン-スルバクタムの投与により回復した。培養ではClostridium sordelliiを含む嫌気性菌は検出されなかった。2例で用いられた3種類の同種移植片は同一ドナー由来であり、tissue processor A(TP-A)により供給されたものであった。CDCは他の同種移植片関連感染症症例について調査し、2002年3月11日の時点で、上記2例を含む筋骨格組織同種移植片に関連した細菌感染症26例の報告を確認した。26例中13例(50%)はClostridium属の感染がみられ、そのうち11例(85%)はTP-Aにより処理された組織を移植されていた。全ての移植片は無菌処理されていたが、最終的な滅菌は行われていなかった。13例は移植後2日目から85日目(中央値8.5日)に症状が発現し、1例は死亡した。CDCは同種移植片関連感染症のリスク低下のため、γ線照射のような組織移植片滅菌法や細菌芽胞に対して有効な新規殺菌法を用いた組織処理過程の追加などを勧告している。
