2001年9月30日から2002年1月19日、WHO共同研究室および米国のNational Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System研究室は呼吸器標本25,779検体についてインフルエンザウイルスの検査を行い、そのうち1,299検体(5%)が陽性であった。インフルエンザ陽性検体の1週ごとの割合は、12月1日で終わる週では3.9%であったが1月19日で終わる週には13.9%に増加した。インフルエンザウイルスは9月30日以降1,229株分離されており、そのうち1,278株(98%)がインフルエンザAウイルス、21株(2%)がインフルエンザBウイルスであった。サブタイプはインフルエンザAウイルス477株中469株(98%)がA(H3N2)ウイルス、8株(2%)がA(H1N1)ウイルスであった。分離ウイルス94株の抗原的特徴は、89株がA(H3N2)ウイルス、4株がA(H1N1)ウイルス、1株がBウイルスであり、その全てはワクチン株A/Panama/2007/99(H3N2)、A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1)、B/Sichuan/379/99に類似していた。11月25日から1月19日に47州のU.S.sentinel医によって報告されたインフルエンザ様疾患患者の1週ごとの割合は、1.3%から2.2%であった。またこの3週間に122のCities Mortality Reporting Systemに記録された死亡の7.7%に肺炎とインフルエンザ(P&I)が関与していた。インフルエンザの最良の予防法はワクチン接種であり、その早期治療には抗ウイルス薬が有用である。
