流行性角結膜炎(EKC)は伝染性が高い重症の結膜炎である。2008~2010年、ヒトアデノウイルス(HAdV)によるEKCのアウトブレイクが4つの州(フロリダ、イリノイ、ミネソタ、ニュージャージー州)から6件、CDCに報告された。フロリダ州では2008年11月~2009年3月、37例がEKCと診断された。8例(22%)は角膜炎を発症し、長期的なステロイド点眼療法が行われた。4例から採取した結膜組織の培養検査では全てがHAdV-8陽性を示した。1例は医師であり、症状が現れるまで診察を行っていたため、診療所を閉鎖して清掃が行われた。イリノイ州では2009年3月、NICUに入院していた2名の未熟児がHAdV-19によるEKCと診断された。さらにNICUに入院していた10名の新生児、NICUおよび眼科のスタッフ(各2名)、患者の家族2名がEKCと診断され、NICUは23日間閉鎖された。ミネソタ州では2008年8月、70例にてEKCの発症が確認され、うち8例は眼科および検眼クリニックのスタッフであった。発症時期は6月28日~9月25日、10例にてウイルス培養検査またはPCR法によりHAdVが確認され、3例からHAdV-8が検出された。症例が出たクリニックは清掃と消毒が行われた。ニュージャージー州では2009年12月~2010年7月、3つのアウトブレイクが発生、計286例での発症が確認された。いずれも発症の30日前に眼科クリニックを受診しており、最も大きなアウトブレイクは245例、結膜塗布検体を採取した4例中3例にてHAdV-8が検出された。他のアウトブレイクは17例(HAdV-3)、24例(HAdV-8)であった。これらのアウトブレイクに関与した施設に対し、スタッフの手の衛生の改善、診察終了時の消毒、複数の患者への投与を避けるための小さなバイアルの使用、EKC患者の検査室の分離、待合室でのEKC患者のトリアージなどが推奨された。
