季節性インフルエンザによる学校閉鎖の家族に対する影響－ケンタッキー州南東部、2008年2月

インフルエンザによる学校閉鎖が家族に及ぼす影響についてはほとんど知られていない。Kentucky Department for Public Health(KDPH)は2008年2月の季節性インフルエンザのアウトブレイク中、欠席者が多かったため学校閉鎖(3～4日)となったケンタッキー州南東部の隣接した2学区(A、B)の14の学校に子供(グレードK-12)が通っている家庭を無作為に選択し、電話調査を実施した。A学区はB学区に比べて社会経済学的状態が低く、A学区の世帯はB学区の世帯よりも学校給食プログラム(National School Lunch Program あるいはSchool Breakfast Program)への登録率が有意に高く、年間世帯収入が有意に低かった。調査には261世帯(小児数:480名[A学区:327名、B学区:145名、学区不明:8名])が回答した。112世帯(42.9%)は少なくとも子供1名が学校給食プログラムに登録しており、このうち11世帯(10.0%)は学校閉鎖中給食がないため問題が生じたと回答した。学校閉鎖中の子供の行動としては、113世帯(43.3%)がショッピングセンターやスーパーマーケットへ出かけていた。76世帯(29.1%)は子供の世話をするため成人家族が仕事を休まなければならず、41世帯(15.7%)は少なくとも1名の成人家族が欠勤のため給料を支払われなかった。252世帯(96.6%)は学校閉鎖の決定に同意していた。同意した理由として、168世帯(64.4%)は学校閉鎖により多くの人々の発病を予防できる、97世帯(37.2%)は子供の発病を予防できると回答し、237世帯(90.8%)は閉鎖中に学校を消毒することはコミュニティにおけるインフルエンザ拡大を抑制するために非常に重要と考えていた。学校閉鎖の理由は高い欠席率が学校の運営や資金に影響を及ぼすためであったが、これは生徒の家族には十分伝わっていなかった。学校閉鎖を実施する場合、学区と保健所は生徒の家族に閉鎖の理由や閉鎖中の適切な行動(発病中は家にいることなど)などについて説明する必要がある。
