発展途上国では毎年5歳未満の小児が約1,000万人死亡する。その主要な死因は急性呼吸器感染症や下痢、麻疹、マラリアなどの感染症であり、これら死亡の約50%に栄養失調が関与している。死亡率に関与する状況を改善するための小児生存プログラムでは、効果的な介入とその実施戦略が重要である。CDCはケニア西部の貧困な農村地域において小児生存のためのアプローチを行う「Nyando Integrated Child Health and Education(NICHE)プロジェクト」のパートナーに加わり、2007年3月～4月にベースライン調査を行った。この報告では、NICHEプロジェクトの活動計画とベースライン調査結果の概要を紹介する。NICHEプロジェクトは、主要な死因（呼吸器感染症、下痢、マラリア）に対する小児生存介入の効果を介入群村落と比較群村落とで比較するものである。2007年4月のベースラインデータ収集完了後、介入群とした30の村落で活動(Safe Water System[SWS]による水処理、殺虫薬処理蚊帳[ITN]の配布など)を開始する(2007年10月まで持続予定)。ベースライン調査では、サンプルとした1,586世帯から3歳未満の小児1,049名と小学生(主に9～13歳)925名のデータを収集した。調査世帯の86.1%はケニア社会経済学的クォンタイルで最低群に分類された。また、生後6～35ヶ月の小児のうち21.5%は急性呼吸器感染症の経験があり、9.1%は調査前24時間以内に下痢の経験があり、28.0%は慢性栄養失調、66.2%は貧血、19.8%はマラリアスミア陽性であった。この集団における5歳未満の小児の生活状態を改善し、死亡リスクを低下させるためには、包括的な介入が必要と考える。
