Wildfire-Related Deaths － Texas, March 12-20, 2006

2006年3月12－20日、テキサス州Panhandle地域で約100万エーカーに及ぶ山火事が起こった。この火災は89以上の建物を破壊して約1,600万ドルの損害をもたらし、8ヶ所のコミュニティの住民4,072名が避難した。火災発生後、Texas Department of State Health Services(TDSHS)は死亡者およびその死亡状況などについて調査を開始した。この火災で12名(男性:8、女性:4、14－94歳)が死亡し、そのうち7名は火災による直接的な影響(煙や高熱など)、5名は間接的な影響(煙による視界不良を原因とした交通事故)が死因であった。全例が3月12日の13時30分－19時の間に受傷し、そのうち11名は3月12日(火災発生から7時間以内)に死亡した。これら死亡事故は4郡、5ヶ所(45マイルの範囲内)で起こった。まず13時30分頃、山火事による煙や砂塵などで視界不良となっていたことが原因で自動車9台の衝突事故が起こり、4名が死亡した。15時頃にはレスキュー隊による避難活動中に家へ引き返した2名が炎にまかれて死亡し、18時頃には避難するのを拒否した94歳の男性が自宅で死亡した。さらに18時30分頃、煙による視界不良のため自動車が谷に落ち、救出を待っている間に煙の吸引が原因で4名が死亡した。また19時頃には消防ボランティアが避難中にトラックが谷に落ち、重傷を負って27日後に死亡した。山火事による事故を防ぐにためには避難勧告に従うことや煙の蔓延している道路を通行しないことなどが重要である。
