麻疹による死亡率低下の進歩－全世界,1999～2003年

発展途上国では依然として麻疹による小児の死亡は重要な問題であり、麻疹による死亡率の低下が遅れている発展途上国45ヶ国を対象としてWHOとUNICEFによるStrategic Plan for Measles Mortality Reduction, 2001―2005が進められている。2005年の麻疹による死亡率を1999年時点の50%とすることが世界的な目標とされており、WHO/UNICEFによる調査では、1歳児の1回ワクチン接種率は1999年:71%、2003年:77%であり、地域別ではアフリカではそれぞれ55%、65%、南アジアでは54%、67%、東アジア/太平洋地域では83%、83%、その他の地域では91%、92%であった。また、2回目の接種を推奨する国も2001年:150ヶ国(78%)から2003年:164ヶ国(85%)へと増加している。発展途上国45ヶ国のうち、予防接種追加運動が実施された国は30ヶ国、約197万人の小児が予防接種を受けている。また、麻疹による小児の死亡は1999年:約873,000名から2003年:530,000名へと39%低下しており、特にアフリカでは同期間46%と大きく低下している。今後も発展途上国での麻疹予防接種を推進し、1歳までの接種率を90%以上とするよう接種システムの確立が急がれる。
