アメリカでは神経管欠損症(NTD)の発症が年間約3,000例認められており、U.S. Public Health Service(1992年)およびInstitute of Medicine(1998年)は妊娠可能年齢女性(18―45歳)に対して、1日400μgの葉酸摂取を勧告し、FDAもシリアル食品の葉酸配合により女性の日常的な葉酸摂取を推進している。その結果、NTDの発症は26%低下したが、全ての女性が葉酸を予防的に摂取していない。今回、2004年に実施された約2,000名の女性を対象とした無作為電話アンケートによるGallup調査結果が報告された。回答率は36%(2,012名)であった。葉酸含有ビタミン剤の摂取率は40%(2003年32%)であったが、依然として非白人、若年層、低学歴女性での摂取率は低く、葉酸の認識率は2003年から、2%低下し77%であった。葉酸が奇形を予防するという認識は2003、2004年それぞれ21、24%、妊娠前に摂取すべきであるという認識は10、12%と微増していた。また、調査前6ヶ月以内にダイエットをしていた女性は24%であり、うち44%が葉酸含有ビタミン剤を摂取、ダイエットをしていなかった女性に比べ約30%摂取率が高かった。ダイエットをしていた女性の48%は低炭水化物ダイエットを実施しており、これらの女性は高学歴、高収入である傾向が認められ、葉酸摂取率も49%と高値であった。
