関節炎および他のリウマチ性疾患(AORC)の医学的・社会的影響は、身体障害、外来診療、入院、経済的負担という点から特徴づけられる。CDCは過去に1997年の全米および州別AORC関連費概算値を報告したが、今回統計学的手法を改善して間接費を概算しなおした。費用の概算には、以前と同様Medical Expenditure Panel Survey(1997)とBehavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System(2002)のデータを利用した。分析上、直接費は医療費、間接費はAORCによる所得の損失とした。分析の結果、直接費は以前と変化がなかったが、間接費は351億ドルに減少した。アメリカにおける1997年のAORC総費用は862億ドル(直接費:511億ドル、間接費:351億ドル)であり、アメリカのGDPの約1%であった。また1997年の州別AORC総費用は、1億2100万ドル(ワイオミング州)―84億ドル(カリフォルニア州)であり、中央値は12億2500万ドル(直接費:7億2600万ドル、間接費:4億9900万ドル)であった。間接費は以前の概算値より低くなったが、関節炎関連費は依然高額であり、関節炎の経済的負担軽減のためのより有効な介入が必要である。
