脳卒中前兆症状の認識－17州およびバージン諸島,2001年

1900年以降、脳卒中による死亡者は減少傾向にあるが、依然アメリカでは死因の第3位を占め、成人身体機能障害の主な原因となっている。一般人における脳卒中の前兆症状とその緊急対処法に関する認識調査を行うためCDCは国内17州およびバージン諸島におけるBehavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System(BRFSS) 2001年のデータを分析した［調査回答率:53.3%(38.9―70.8%)］。その結果、脳卒中の前兆症状に対する認識は高く、突然の顔面、腕および脚の知覚麻痺および脱力感(94.1%)、突然の錯乱状態および会話や知的障害(87.9%)、突然の歩行困難、めまい、および平衡調整障害(85.9%)が主に知られており、突然の視覚障害(68.1%)および原因不明の頭痛（61.3%）は比較的低い認識率であった。一方、突然の胸痛は37.8%が脳卒中の症状であると誤認していた。また、対処法としては86.1%が911に通報すると回答した。州別では突然の頭痛に対する認識率がメイン州54.9%―ウエストバージニア州68.1%、対処の第一選択として911に通報する比率はモンタナ州80.4%―コネチカット州89.7%であった。脳卒中の前兆症状を全て正確に把握していた回答者は全体で19.6%(バージン諸島7.5%―アラバマ州24.8%)と低く、911への通報と合わせた場合は17.2%(バージン諸島5.9%―アラバマ州21.7%)であった。
