Trends in Cigarette Smoking Among High School Students - United States, 1991-2001

高校生の喫煙状況を調査したYouth Risk Behavior Survey(YRBS)の1991－2001年データをCDCが分析して報告。アメリカ50州およびワシントンDCの高校生(9年生から12年生)を対象に、喫煙経験の有無、調査前30日以内の禁煙経験および現在喫煙しているか(調査前30日以内に20日間以上の喫煙)を質問し、白人、黒人およびスパニッシュに分けて分析し、喫煙者に関しては男女、人種および学年別に分析した。その結果、”過去に喫煙経験がある”は70.4%(1999年)から63.9%(2001年)へ減少、”30日以内に喫煙した”は過去最高の36.4%(1997年)から大幅に28.5%(2001年)へ低下し、1991年の27.5%以来の低水準となった。また、”調査前30日以内に20日以上喫煙している”は、1991年の12.7%から1997年16.7%、1999年16.8%と増加していたが、2001年には13.8%と大幅に低下した。喫煙率は男女別では男子29.2%、女子27.7%、人種別では白人が最も多く31.9%、次いでスパニッシュ26.6%、黒人14.7%であり、学年が上がるほど上昇した。禁煙を推奨する教育、メディアによる禁煙キャンペーン、タバコ税の増税などにより、未成年者の喫煙率が低下したと考えられる。
