Executive Advisor
On July 1, 2015, I assumed the office of Executive Advisor to International Medical Information Center (IMIC). Until the end of May 2015, I served as Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), and led the largest cluster of WHO, in charge of countermeasures against acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), tuberculosis, malaria and tropical diseases, which can cause a vicious cycle of poverty and illness. While I was working at the WHO, I became keenly aware of the expanding tendency, on a global scale, towards mutual dependency. The recent episodes of Ebola hemorrhagic fever and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) have underscored the necessity of cooperation beyond borders when combatting illnesses. Furthermore, global cooperation is also needed for the development and supply of new technologies and drugs. Towards these ends, it is critically important to provide accurate information and rapidly process the huge amounts of information coming from overseas. This should be also added valueby utilization of the information in research & development and practices of public health and healthcare in Japan. Improvement in both quantitative and qualitative aspects is required for such purposes. Those who worked to found IMIC were motivated by their quick insight into the importance of international medical information. I shall follow that tradition proactively and shall do my best, on the basis of my 13-year global experience, to contribute to the expansion of IMIC’s businesses, so that Japanese researchers, enterprises and practitioners can continue to play important roles in global health, which is changing and advancing dynamically. I shall be grateful for your cooperation.
