History of the foundation

April 1972With the approval of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the foundation became independent of the Keio University Shinanomachi Media Center (Kitasato Memorial Medical Library), its mother organization, and assumed such work as that related to MEDLARS, INIS and APTIC.
August 1973It received an assignment for research and development on the codes for medical terminology and a thesaurus for medical terminology from the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
August 1974The foundation was established as a center specializing in medicine within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
April 1975A dial access service that supplies current medical and healthcare information was initiated.
October 1975It joined the Japanese Medical Library Association (JMLA) as a supporting member.
December 1976It signed a business contract with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the United States for the International Cancer Research Data Bank (ICRDB).
November 1977The first issue of “IMIC”, a medical information periodical, was published.
December 1977Online connection to British Library Lending Division (BLLD) was established.
November 1981The IMIC library was founded.
May 1982Open seminars and open lectures were held at the ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the foundation.
July 1985The Osaka Service Office opened.
October 1987Open seminars and open lectures were held at the 15th anniversary in Tokyo and Osaka.
July 1991The construction of a medical information database for medical congresses and medical seminars was initiated.
April 1993Rapid bibliographic communication of drug information and database creation service were initiated.
December 1994Rapid reporting service for adverse effects of pharmaceutical products reported in Japan (Side Effect Literature in IMIC or SELIMIC) was started.
June 1995Headquarters and the Tokyo Office moved to Shinanomachi-Rengakan, Shinjuku (the current location).
November 1995An operation was started to offer “A database for the Proceedings of Medical Congresses in Japan” to NACSIS-IR.
April 1996“Cancer information service” via fax was initiated.
October 1997Memorial lectures were held at the ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the foundation.
IMIC Web [databases for information on adverse effects SELIMIC Web, translation of the abstracts from MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report; epidemiological information from the United States) and an index list of feature articles published in Japan] were made available.
A service specialized to web members was initiated.
October 1999The head office of the Japanese Society of Clinical Hematology was established.
December 1999Production and sales of MedDRA Navigator, a viewing software for MedDRAJ was initiated.
February 2000IMIC Order (copying service via the Internet and search application system) was started.
April 2000A service to organize academic congresses on consignment was initiated.
July 2000EBM Promotion Center was established.
June 2001A management system of academic congress information was introduced on IMICWeb.
April 2002Operation of the main system and a management system of copyright fees was initiated.
July 2002A Web edition catalog for the periodicals available at IMIC was made available.
October 2003SELIMIC Web renewal and IMICOrder corporate edition were newly created.
April 2005Medical Device Alert service, SELIMIC Web Alert service and GVP (Good Vigilance Practice) contract literature research were initiated.
April 2006Documentation services providing information for the proper use of pharmaceutical products were initiated.
December 2006The head office of Japanese Board of Cancer Therapy was established in Medical Societies Office.
April 2007Obtained the Privacy Mark.
Operation of IMICOrder version 2 was initiated.
April 2009Certification granting the Privacy Mark was renewed.
August 2009A new branch office (IMIC ANNEX) was set up near the Shinanomachi-Rengakan office.
